Communities In Schools of Milledgeville–Baldwin County (CISMBC) is a nonprofit that has been serving the students, schools, and community of Baldwin County for over 10 years. Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. CISMBC provides tutoring services, food, clothing, mentorship programs, reading workshops, and so much more.
Alongside over 100 other Communities In Schools affiliates, CISMBC offers a variety of services to students and communities across the United States. Nationally, CIS serves close to 2,500 schools and over 1.5 million students. This kind of success is only made possible by the 40,000 volunteers and thousands of local partnerships who continue to serve their communities and support CIS.
CISMBC has seen meaningful progress as the team continues to implement school-based activities during this pandemic. Students have benefited from the unwavering support of the staff and volunteers at each school as well as services through the Bee Well Clinic. Students have also benefited from the virtual tutoring and the virtual reading library CISMBC has provided in response to the increased number of students participating in remote learning options.
Alongside many community partners, CISMBC is working in Baldwin County to provide opportunities for local individuals to obtain the skills they need to lead more rewarding and fulfilling lives. In turn, these individuals benefit the Baldwin County community as they become more successful and responsible in their roles as employees, parents, neighbors and citizens.
CISMBC is included in the Certified Literate Community Program (CLCP) and is currently leading the charge in literacy efforts in the Milledgeville/Baldwin community. The mission of the CISMBC Certified Literate Community Program is to provide resources for Baldwin County citizens to ensure literacy; “an individual’s ability to read, write, speak in English, compute, and solve problems at the levels of proficiency necessary to function on the job, in the family, and in society”. (~Workforce Investment Act of 1998, Section 203) The CLCP will ensure Milledgeville will be able to attract new businesses that are seeking a motivated, dependable and capable pool of prospective employees.
